Didactic Green Pathway
in Historic Fort Monostor, Komrom, Hungary

The World Heritage-candidate famous military monument Fort Monostor is the largest and most protected element of fortification system of Komrom.The site-management is going to create a complex, national and euro-regional Cultural Center. This Cultural Center, military cultural themeparc will become one of the most attractive cultural-touristic site of the region and the country for the end of this monument-developing and renovation procedure.
The Fort Monostor Military Cultural Center Non-profit Company for Restoration Maintenance & Property Management was established in 2000 with 23 million HUF by three Ministries: (Ministry of National Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Finance/ Treasury Property Directorate) and the Municipalities of the Komrom City and the Komrom-Esztergom County. It is carrying out the development and functioning works. The main sources of ongoing and planned developments are the incomes of our activities (non-profit and economic), Hungarian and international common sources (public-benefit contracts and competitions), privat investments and subsidies of Sponsors and Maecenas. The total Budget of the Company was 192 million HUF (cca 770 000 ) in 2004.
The Fort Monostor as ruined monument and cultural event place attracts many visitors:16000 peoples in 1999 and 80000 in 2004.Moiety of visitors comes from secondary schools and colleges (6-18 years old students) in framed organised grouped visit. The number of family and organised groups and individual visitors are increasingly important in the summer tourist-season because of the big cultural events (creative and restoration-camps, festivals, concerts, trials). The additional utilization is frequented in the pre- and postseason, too (in spring and autumn): education and training course, professional and company meeting (Company Day, conference, workshops). Customers can use all professional and service potentials of Fort Monostor.
The possibility of experienced exploration and didactic-intellectual approach of Fort Monostor is following the contemporary cultur-consumption: the cultur-plaza provides some different cultural programmes which are interconnected to each other, but enjoyable separately like several moduls. One of these moduls is the Green Didactic Pathway. It joins to Memorial Palace (collections of museum) and to Experience-Places (new objects and events) thematic project-groups, furthermore it could be a party of the local and micro-regional Pathway -itineraries.

The Didactic Green Pathway, 4 km long, closed round-way is located on the 70 hectar field which has 1,5 km passage alongside of Danube-river. It contains approximately 30-35 marked places and objects with descriptions and signs.
The Pathway starts from the external reception area the first element of Visitor Center and it returns to this point. Here will be a modern information system and an up-to-date cultural-tourism services meet our visitors ( camping, hostel, drinking-fountain, car and autobus parking, bus-station, maps, plans, dodgers, information boards, internet-connection; WC, douche,self-deposit, bycicle-park, rental service, bankautomat, etc)
The Fort Monostor Didactic Pathway- first one in Hungary presents the architectural and military technical secrets of national-monument Fort, the treasure of local nature,and new ways of the valuation-protecting by a cognitiv (intellectual and sensory) adventure at the same time. The harmonic integration of built and natural enviroment like an ordered, organised aggregation of values of Fort Monostor will presented here, and the coherence between these items can be explain by visitors. Although some elements of Pathway are found in somewhere else, but much of elements (special spaces attractions, themes,) of Fort Monostor Didactic Pathway are visible only in this site. These moduls will be unique objects enjoyable in this enviroment.
The scenes (stations) of Pathway appear in changing order, it has divided in 4 thematic groups:
A: Natural values:
1. Ornithology observatiom-post: Bird ambush 2. Gang-board on the Danube for seeing the ships and circulation on the river (it is a port, landing-stage and fishing-place in one block) 3. Danube-monitoring-station (to look over the quality of water, and a descending tunnel under the river basin) 4. Sandhill-monitoring place (geological cutaway view, presentation of structure of hill) 5. Water-level monitoring presents the moving of Danube water with explication 6. Elisabeth-Fountain ( natural fountain from 1920, near by the river) 7. Land-art contemporary modern landscape architectural objects (rises and walls against noise) 8. Planting of former vinery in a small field
B. Built values - art relic architectural and museum-technician pieces
1. Gold-lavatory station - according to the legend there are some gold in the Danube 2. Cyclop stone-walls, earthworks, embankments of Fort Monostor and their architectural works 3. Gates and protector-hole in front of entraces, bridges, dikes of Fort 4. Professional analysis of shooting-fields by hills, emplacement of cannons and guns and loopholes 5. Casamates and corridors (up and under the ground, covered by earth) 6. The highest point of Green Didactic Pathway is the former soviet lookout tower 7. Panoramic- telescopes (military and civil) 8. Re-enacted ship-mill (common project with Szendenre Skanzen)
C. Enviromental objects and alternative energy-supply
1. Selective waste collection places 2. Protecting-line of Danube board (barragem, high-bank, port) 3. Earth shelter and the maintenance of vegetation inside and outside of Fort 4. Wind power industry 5. Solar cell 6. Miniature- hydroelectric power station 7. Memorial forest of heroes ( 106 oak trees) 8. GPRS Geocatching- box installation (3 sites)
D. Memorial places, works of art and new objects
1. Welcome-wall from inox in artistic style and information sails and explication the reason and function of these objects 2. Parc of Military Technic from the 20th century (mine-detector ship, tank, whippet, war plane) 3. Memorial of the young victims of the battle of Elisabeth Island from 1920 4. Memorial of Relocated Hungarian from Czechoslovakia (1944-48). and the chime 5. Sun dial (in the inside court of Danubian Bastion) 6. Memorial of horses ( unique statue on the world which commemorate of horses died during the wars) 7. Europe Gate the 4m high light-transmitting-concrete statue was initiated in 2004. The Green Didactic Pathway may look like a built example of the Think global, act local! disciple by the spatiotemporal, functional, aesthetic and moral coherence. It can drive the spectators due to this experienced cognition to the permanent knowledge (and the moral conclusion)

The Green Didactic Pathway is an autonomous program (guided or without guide), but it can be joint to other sights or service (visiting of museums, conference, riding horse or bike) of Fort Monostor. It could be organize a complex or wholeday-, weekly program or camps here or in the micro-region building upon the experiences of Fort Monostor Didactic Pathway.
The attractive sites will very seductive for groups, individual visitors and families, and it can be an active element of eductional- training course in Fort Monostor in interactive playful way. Many spontaneous experience appear during the go along the route : the night-lighting of walls, horse-riding, coach-promenade etc.
The Pathway will have solid road surface with crash barriers. The visitors will carried on a safely-road. 3 big information board will installed in external area with general knowledge, and many green-column installations get direct information at the sites and station of Pathway in 3 languages (Hungarian, English and German). The system of green-columns will analogous to the internal red-column info-line which will be in the court. The website, green brochure and books of Fort Monostor can help for the previously preparation of tour of Pathway.

The complete investment can be realize in 2-3 years according to the infrasturcture-development of Fort Monostor Non-profit Company. The total budget is 260 million HUF (cca. 1 040 000 ) except for the alternative energy-supply (appr. 600 million HUF ~ 2 400 000 ). The source of investment will covered by successful application of EU Structural Founds. Otherwise we would like to captivate the help of the Ministry of Enviromental Protection and Water, and we will apply for national and international Founds (Ford, NATO).
